Demeter is the goddess of grain, agriculture, and the fertility of the earth. She is one of the Olympian twelve and was widely worshiped throughout the Greek world, especially in rural areas. Her role is tied closely to the cycle of growth, harvest, and decay. She is most often shown holding wheat or a torch, sometimes accompanied by Persephone.
