Although the shawl is mainly stocking stitch, designed especially to showcase a single skein of beautiful tonal yarn, this is far from mindless knitting as you knit from the centre down to create the leaf design enclosed in lace.
The centre increases form the main vein of the leaf. As you progress down twisted stitches form the 'lateral veins'. Simple lace columns differentiate the 'leaf lobes'. Finally the lace expands and merges to complete the outline of the leaf.
